Many great songwriters in the music industry have been consistent over the years. Some have written songs which remained standards for decades. Some have written songs which captured the affection of generations. These songwriters have talent and connections which precede them throughout the music industry. This kind of influence is earned by due-diligence in their own songwriting.
Even though music has transformed wildly from the days of Sinatra, some songwriters are able to successfully work their way through the system almost as beautifully as their songs do. In fact, that’s their secret. They know a good song will precede them into a Music Producers office.
How do they know that?
Songwriters are a special breed of people because their imagination is working to the sound of musical instruments. Our mind strives to come up with another story and a unique melody to put it to. Creative people sometimes give too much attention to the heart, when sometimes we really need to give more attention to the mind. We need to get past the romance and sober up. When we do that, we can bring our song to life. And that’s what these songwriters know is most important. Write a song with your heart, then write it with your intellect. Make it flawless so it will precede you.
Any songwriter worth their salt knows the song should be flawless in these areas. From the Producers perspective, this is what they are looking for.
- Flawless Song Structure: When they hear the song it must flow from beginning to end smoothly. Transitions can be wild but they have to fit with the soul of the song. They are not looking for every song to be a ballad. They are looking for a song that agrees from Verse > Bridge > Chorus > Verse.
- Flawlessly Lyrics: The Verse’s, Pre-chorus, Chorus, and Bridge, each has their own requirements. The Verse, for example, may have three lines with their own syllable counts, and rhyme scheme. The Chorus, Bridge, Pre-chorus and any other part you add to it must be flawless in their construction. An exact syllable count from one Verse to another is flawless. A different rhyme scheme matched from Verse to verse is flawless. A Chorus that reacts to a Verse correctly is flawless.
- Flawless Theme: The story you tell must stay to point. When you start the Lyric it will unfold in one direction. The theme will help you determine the setting, musical tone, and emotional tone.
The Structure, Lyrics, and Theme should fit together like a master put it together. “Error” is not in the songwriters’ vocabulary. “Flawless” is in the songwriters’ vocabulary.
This is why some songwriters songs precede them wherever they go. Their songs sound good and are flawlessly presented.
After writing two books about songwriting I’ve discovered there is no end to explaining it. I will continue to write about songwriting on this blog so please come back for more articles in the Music Category.
